At 40 years old I find myself craving nature and silence more than ever before. My journey started early at 07:00 in the morning as I left the busy streets of the Hanoi Old Quarter. The drive toward Cat Ba Island was a welcome change of pace with the urban landscape slowly melting into lush green fields and coastal views. By the time we reached Ben Beo Pier at 11:15 I could already feel the salt air clearing my mind and refreshing my spirit. My guide was ready with the entrance tickets and we boarded our vessel just before 11:20 to begin our cruise through the magnificent Lan Ha Bay.

Floating Through History and Limestone Giants
As the boat began to move I was immediately struck by the sheer scale of the limestone karsts rising from the water. We sailed past Cai Beo Fishing Village which is one of the oldest floating communities in northern Vietnam. Seeing the traditional houses bobbing on the water made me realize how deeply connected the local people are to this ancient bay. Shortly after 12:00 we enjoyed a freshly prepared Vietnamese lunch. Eating local seafood while surrounded by thousands of uniquely shaped karst towers was a massive highlight of the trip. The formations looked like ancient symbols or sleeping giants rising from the emerald water and it was impossible not to feel small in their presence.

Exploring Hidden Caves and Pristine Waters
By 14:30 we were ready for some activity so we took the kayaks out to explore the Dark and Bright Caves. Paddling through these natural tunnels and majestic archways was a surreal experience that felt like entering a secret world. The area is ecologically protected and I felt incredibly lucky to witness such a pristine environment with my own eyes. Later in the afternoon around 16:30 we stopped at Ba Trai Dao Beach for a swim. This spot was remote and quiet which was exactly the kind of escape I was looking for. Jumping off the boat into the cool water felt like being a kid again and gave me a genuine sense of freedom. Before the sun went down at 17:30 we even visited a local fish farm to see the hard work that goes into living and working on the bay.

Magic Under the Moonlight
The most enchanting part of the entire trip happened after sunset around 19:30. We headed back out in the kayaks to search for bioluminescent plankton. As I dipped my paddle into the dark water it began to glow with a magical blue light. Seeing my own silhouette sparkle in the dark water as I moved was something I will never forget. It felt like paddling through a galaxy of stars right here on earth. After that incredible session we arrived at the peaceful Viet Hai Village to settle in for the night surrounded by the serene sounds of the jungle and the mountains.
Morning Zen and Village Life
I woke up at 06:30 on the second day for a hearty breakfast that fueled me for the day ahead. By 07:30 I was on a bicycle exploring the winding paths of Viet Hai Village. Breathing in the fresh mountain air while cycling past lush forests was the perfect way to start the morning. I even tried a fun fish massage in a natural stream which was a strange but relaxing sensation. We then sailed toward Monkey Island at 09:30 where I had the choice to relax on the sandy beach or trek up to a viewpoint. Looking out over the panoramic view of Lan Ha Bay I realized that these quiet corners of Vietnam are truly special for anyone seeking peace. We enjoyed one last lunch on the boat before returning to the harbor at 11:30. This trip was the perfect balance of adventure and soul searching that every modern traveler needs.
